It is time for the inaugural post of a new Sci Chic post series: The Kickstarter Science Spotlight! There are so many new innovations in science and engineering going on, and Kickstarter is a great place to go to find them. Below we are featuring some of our favorite current Kickstarter campaigns that are moving the STEAM fields forward. Click on the titles to go to their Kickstarter page and learn more!

Its not secret that the team here at Sci Chic is a fan of space. Growing up in Florida we got to see the magic of shuttle launches from our backyard and had family working for NASA. Well now Moonspike is working on something that has never been done before, a crowdfunded trip to the moon. They have no state funded backing, but want to show that the moon isn’t out of reach to civillians. The mission is a one-way mission, which results in some pretty cool is the prizes for the backers. The more you donate the more data storage space you earn on the rocket. This means you get to send whatever you want to the moon and it stays there! This is a great chance to push space exploration to the next level.
This group of engineers turned entrepreneur has created a water bottle that kills 99.99% of bacteria and viruses in just 3 minutes, is fully reusable and can be powered by solar energy! How confident are they in their product? In a demonstration video they drank water that had been taken out of a public toilet after just 3 minutes of treatment! Find them on Facebook here to see the video. They are working to improve developing nations and disaster relief as well as options for campers.
Fashionable wearable tech? Count us in. This project still has over 30 days left to get funded and they are already about $100,000 over their original goal. They have made a flexible wearable display that you can wear around your wrist and show off any patterns, pictures or videos to match your style. On top of that, their rechargeable battery lasts up to a year! They have taken the lessons learned from the current smart watches on the market and taken their product to the next level.
We have a soft spot in our hearts for LEGOs, so if someone claims they are “The LEGO of the Future”, they have our attention. Robo Wunderkind is taking the classics of building toys and combining them with modern technology by pulling from the simplicity and modular assembly of LEGOs and making them programmable and able to be controlled by smartphones and tablets. They giving kids a simplistic colorful drag and drop method of learning programming while giving them a hands-on playing environment. Robo Wunderkind is going to be a great resource not only for parents, but for teachers and STEM outreach programs and we can’t wait to see them get on the market!
Have a Kickstarter you think we should check out that is helping innovate and move science and engineering forward? Send it to us at scichiccontact@gmail.com and you might see it here in the future!
