Laser Cutting vs. 3D Printing

Sci Chic offers many customization options for you to make your jewelry your own. One of those options we are now offering you the chance to pick your manufacturing method for many of your jewelry pieces. This means you get to select whether we create your jewelry piece using 3D printing or laser cutting technology.
But what exactly is the difference between the two and how will it change your jewelry piece?
Put simply, laser cutting cuts your jewelry out of a piece of acrylic, while 3D printing builds your piece layer by layer. Laser cutting will result in a much cleaner looking jewelry item, but has limits on the designs it can create. 3D printing can generate more complex shapes and 3D structures while laser cutting is more limited to 2D design with engraving. This is why not all of our items can be offered in a laser cutting option.
Additionally, laser cut pieces that Sci Chic produces will have more of a glossy shine to them than the 3D printed plastics. See the picture below for a comparison of our Small Atom Necklace laser cut and 3D printed in black acrylic and black plastic. 3D printed is on the left and laser cut is on the right.

So why are we offering you this choice? We want to make sure we are creating the perfect piece of jewelry for you. Sci Chic is all about customization and bringing you into the making process. By letting you choose how we make your piece of jewelry, we are giving you a story to tell and ensuring this piece of jewelry is exactly what you want.
